Many players of Team India had recently reached the BCCI's Center of Excellence to give fitness tests. But now a shocking revelation has been made about these fitness tests, which has raised many questions.
Many Indian players like Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah had recently gathered to give fitness tests at the BCCI's Center of Excellence. At the same time, Virat Kohli reportedly gave his fitness test in London. All the players have passed this test. But now a report has claimed that these tests were only for show, as neither its results were made public nor the media was informed about it.
Fitness test is now a joke in Team India
Let us tell you, when Virat Kohli was the captain of Team India and Ravi Shastri was playing the role of head coach, the Yo-Yo test used to be an important criterion for selection in the team. At that time, players who failed this test were dropped from the team. But a recent report claims that since the era of Kohli and Ravi Shastri, fitness tests in the Indian men's cricket team have become a mere formality and are no longer the basis for selection of players.
Some big players believe that tests like Yo-Yo and Bronco increase the risk of injury, and they want to manage their bodies in other ways. A report in the Times of India quoted a source as saying, 'There are people who are passionate about Indian cricket, but some strong voices have constantly suppressed the discussion of Yo-Yo and fitness. Not just Yo-Yo, but also the 2 km run test. There was a time when the Yo-Yo marker was raised to further improve the standards, but now it has become a regular run. When there is no result, why will people take it seriously?'
Former strength and conditioning coach reveals
Former India strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai also said that after the end of Shastri-Kohli's tenure, these tests were never a selection criterion. He said that after the 2019 World Cup, we conduct Yo-Yo tests three times every year for almost all contract players. But it has never been a selection criterion. It is a fitness assessment parameter, where we as coaches, as people working in the NCA, get an idea, a glimpse about their fitness at that particular stage.'
