Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, who recently retired from all forms of cricket, writing that his firm playing style was a reminder of the beauty of Test cricket. Pujara announced his retirement last Sunday, ending his illustrious career of 103 Test matches.
PM Narendra Modi wrote in a letter to Pujara, "In an era dominated by shorter formats of cricket, you reminded of the beauty of the longer format of the game. Your unwavering patience and ability to bat with concentration for long periods of time made you the backbone of the Indian batting order." The former batsman, who batted at number three for India, posted a copy of the letter on social media and thanked the Prime Minister for his warm words.
Referring to Pujara's key role in India's two consecutive series wins in Australia in 2018 and 2021, Prime Minister Modi wrote, "Your outstanding cricket career has been filled with moments of remarkable skill and determination, especially in challenging conditions overseas."
He said, "For example, fans will always remember occasions like the Test match in Australia when you laid the foundation for India's first historic series win on Australian soil!"
Modi wrote, "By standing firm against one of the strongest bowling attacks, you showed what it means to take responsibility for the team." Modi also praised Pujara's commitment to domestic cricket.
He said, "Your passion for the game is also reflected in the fact that despite being an international cricketer, you considered it necessary to play first-class cricket, be it for Saurashtra or abroad."
The Prime Minister further said, "Your long association with Saurashtra cricket and your contribution in putting Rajkot on the cricket map will be a source of immense pride for every youth of this region." Pujara wrote in his response, "I am honored to receive a letter of appreciation from our Honorable Prime Minister on my retirement."
He said, "I greatly appreciate your sentiments. As I step into my second innings, I will cherish every memory spent on the field and the love and appreciation I have received. Thank you Sir."
