Harmanpreet, Sciver-Brunt star in MI’s rapid recovery

Mumbai Indians responded emphatically to their opening-day setback in the WPL 2026, registering a dominant 50-run win over Delhi Capitals in Saturday’s double-header at the DY Patil Stadium. Led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten 74 off 42 balls and a fluent 70 from Nat Sciver-Brunt, MI piled up an imposing 195 for 4 before bowling Delhi out for 145.

Put in to bat by Delhi skipper Jemimah Rodrigues, Mumbai once again found themselves under early pressure. Amelia Kerr was dismissed for a golden duck, brilliantly caught one-handed by Lizelle Lee behind the stumps. Lee followed it up with another sharp grab to remove G Kamilini, handing debutant Nandini Sharma her first WPL wicket. Amid the early losses, Sciver-Brunt kept the innings afloat, scoring the bulk of the runs in a 49-run stand and racing to 32 off just 20 balls before being joined by Harmanpreet.

The experienced duo steadied the innings and then accelerated, adding 66 runs for the fourth wicket in just 47 deliveries. Harmanpreet took a particular liking to the pace bowling, while Sciver-Brunt reached her half-century from 32 balls. After a brief slowdown, Harmanpreet reignited the momentum with a six and a four off Chinelle Henry, pushing MI past 100 by the end of the 13th over. Sciver-Brunt then launched Minnu Mani for three sixes in the next over but departed soon after, caught off Shree Charani.

Harmanpreet found late support from Nicola Carey, who struck a brisk 21 off 12 balls. The MI captain brought up her fifty from 34 deliveries and finished in style, smashing four consecutive boundaries off Charani in the final over to lift Mumbai to a commanding total.

Delhi’s chase faltered from the outset. Shafali Verma struggled to find timing, while Lizelle Lee managed only 10 on debut. Carey delivered a decisive blow by dismissing both Verma and Laura Wolvaardt in the same over. The Capitals were four down inside the PowerPlay for the first time, with Rodrigues also departing after a spectacular one-handed catch by Kamilini.

Chinelle Henry provided some resistance, anchoring the innings with a fighting 56. She shared a 40-run stand with Niki Prasad and added smaller partnerships with Sneh Rana and Minnu Mani, but the required rate kept climbing. Amelia Kerr was introduced later in the innings and proved decisive, removing Niki and Minnu before claiming Henry’s wicket to effectively seal the contest.

Kerr finished as Mumbai’s standout bowler with figures of 3 for 24, while Carey chipped in with three wickets despite conceding runs. Delhi were eventually dismissed for 145 in the 19th over, as MI completed a comprehensive turnaround after their opening defeat.
