A revamped DC aim for a swift response against the Giants

Three matches into the WPL season, all five teams have now taken the field, but as Sunday’s clash approaches, the Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Giants find themselves in very different positions. With less than 24 hours separating their respective games, momentum and recovery will both be key factors.

Delhi Capitals endured a tough start to their campaign, suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of the Mumbai Indians in their opener. It was far from the ideal beginning under new skipper Jemimah Rodrigues. Their bowling attack struggled to contain runs, particularly the spin department, as Sneh Rana, Shree Charani and Minnu Mani all went at more than 9.5 runs per over. On debut, Nandini Sharma stood out as the lone positive, claiming two of the four wickets that fell.

The struggles continued with the bat. Apart from Chinelle Henry’s fighting half-century, the Capitals’ batting lineup failed to fire. Niki Prasad’s 12 was the next best score, highlighting the lack of support for Henry. The top order was undone by early movement, while the middle order couldn’t stay long enough to build meaningful partnerships.

In contrast, the Gujarat Giants kicked off their WPL campaign with a historic first-ever opening-game victory. Youngster Anushka Sharma and Ashleigh Gardner laid a solid foundation, before Georgia Wareham and Bharti Fulmali provided late fireworks to propel the Giants to their highest WPL total of 207 for 4.

Their bowlers backed up the batting performance with a collective effort. Georgia Wareham, Renuka Singh Thakur and Sophie Devine each picked up two wickets. However, there remains room for improvement at the death, after conceding 54 runs in the final five overs against the UP Warriorz, with Asha Sobhana and Sophie Ecclestone doing the bulk of the damage.
